About RAQS SHARQI (or as it's know in the west, BELLYDANCE)

Raqs Sharqi’ (RAHks SHAR-kee), or ‘Dans Orientale’ (coined by the French during the period of Orientalism),, as Belly Dance is called in Arabic, is generally believed to originally be an ancient female rite of passage into womanhood, as a dance form passed on generationally from mother to daughter. Movements within the dance mimic those related to and subsequently aid in actual childbirth. This ancient and mysterious (dance) art form is thousands of years old, rumored to possibly be 5,000 years old! Adding to its mystery is the specific country or region of origin, with contenders being countries from the all over the Middle East, Northern Africa (Egypt), the Mediterranean region and even countries in south Asia, such as India and Pakistan. Here in the western world--in the United States, specifically--the first exposure to Raqs Sharqi was in 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair, where 'Little Egypt' fascinated the public with her never-before-seen dance moves. Regardless of when or from where it came, Belly Dance is now enjoying a surge in popularity all over the world – And why not?  This beautifully fluid, precise and emotive dance art form is also an exceptional form of exercise for the performer and physical beauty in the eye of the beholder, the audience.
